James F. Meschia, M.D., is a neurologist with special interest in vascular neurology. His clinical focus includes:

  • Inherited cerebrovascular diseases, including single-gene disorders such as cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL), Fabry disease, and sickle cell disease
  • Stroke in the young
  • Asymptomatic and symptomatic carotid atherosclerotic disease
  • Moyamoya disease and moyamoya syndrome
  • Unruptured intracranial aneurysms
  • Central nervous system vasculitis

Dr. Meschia is one of the leaders of the largest clinical trials for preventing stroke in patients with asymptomatic carotid stenosis. He also runs the Mayo Clinic Cerebrovascular Diseases Registry, which actively enrolls and studies patients and their family members with apparent familial cerebrovascular diseases.
