He then completed a fellowship in incontinence and prosthetic surgery at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota.

Dr. Petrou is recognized internationally for his work in the field of female urethral disorders, including patients with known urethral strictures or narrowing, or those wishing to avoid the need for repeat urethral dilations. He has been recognized as one of the Best Doctors in America by Best Doctors Incorporated, and is past president of the prestigious Society of Southern Urologic Surgeons. He has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed publications and multiple book chapters. Dr. Petrou is a member of the American Urological Association, the Society for Urodynamics and Female Urology, and is certified by the American Board of Urology.
