Patient Care

New protocols reduce side effects, improve outcomes for children with ALD
At Mayo, children of family members with ALD are followed prospectively for signs of neurological symptoms. Bone marrow transplant completed after diagnosis but before symptoms develop helps stabilize white matter in children with the cerebral form of adrenoleukodystrophy.

Early diagnosis and treatment is key for children with craniosynostosis
Early diagnosis and treatment may allow patients with craniosynostosis to have endoscopic surgery, which has a lower rate of complications than open procedures, requires only a one-night hospital stay and has a patient-transfusion rate of just 10 percent.

Mayo's stroke telemedicine expertise expands to the Upper Midwest
Stroke telemedicine uses audiovisual technology to connect patients in rural areas with stroke specialists at hub hospitals. The model increases the likelihood that patients who need advanced therapies will receive them quickly, lessening the risk of significant deficit after stroke.

Research

Arizona stroke telemedicine hub-and-spoke model improves outcomes with cost savings
A telestroke network may result in the appropriate use of more clot-busting drugs, more catheter-based interventional procedures, and more patients discharged home independently. Research shows Mayo's Arizona network realized increased cost savings despite upfront and maintenance expenses.
