Allen W. Brown, M.D.

  1. Physiatrist

Allen W. Brown, M.D., is Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in the College of Medicine and Science, and Hospital Practice Chair of the Department. He has worked to develop integrated clinical practice models to provide coordinated, efficient trans-discipline rehabilitation care for individuals whose brain function has been altered by injury or disease. He and his clinical team use a data-driven practice-based evidence approach to continuous improvement of disease management strategies for acquired brain disorders across the care continuum.

Along with this clinical practice, Dr. Brown and his research team contribute to the advancement of brain rehabilitation science. Their work is supported by Federal, sub-Federal, and Foundational grants studying primarily stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Some of Dr. Brown's active research projects include:

  • Using artificial intelligence to identify biomarkers within digital brain imaging and electrophysiology data sets that predict clinical outcomes after TBI including post-traumatic epilepsy.
  • In partnership with American Indian Tribal communities and state Trauma Systems in the upper Great Lake states: accurately estimate the epidemiological incidence of TBI by minimizing racial misclassification and facilitate regional listening sessions to qualitatively analyze lived experiences related to TBI in these Tribal communities.

  • Epidemiology of traumatic brain injury in the upper Midwest.
  • Testing complex behavioral interventions using pragmatic clinical trials to improve outcomes after traumatic brain injury by combining the medical and social models of disease and partnering with community-based agencies.
  • Using artificial intelligence to identify digital biomarkers within brain imaging data that predict outcomes after brain injury.
