Dr. Riegert-Johnson trained in medicine at Mayo Clinic Rochester. After his general medical training, he was the Chief Medical Resident. He then trained in Clinical Genetics at Johns Hopkins Hospital. After training in Baltimore, he returned to Mayo Clinic Rochester and completed a Gastroenterology fellowship. He is board certified in both Gastroenterology and Clinical Genetics and Genomics and has been on staff at Mayo Clinic Florida since 2018.

Dr. Riegert-Johnson's clinical practice, procedural expertise and research interests are focused on conditions which increase the risk of cancer. These include Lynch syndrome, familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), familial pancreatic cancer and other conditions. His clinic offers genetic counseling and genetic testing to interested patients. He performs both upper endoscopy and colonoscopy, focusing on very detailed examinations for high risk patients. He has published more than 90 scientific publications, book chapters and abstracts and is actively involved in professional societies including the Collaborative Group of the Americas on Inherited Colorectal Cancer (CGA-ICC).
