Blog: Watch for antidepressant side effects

    By Gabrielle J. Melin, M.D.

Earlier, I talked about how antidepressant side effects are possible, though usually mild.

Need more help?
  • National Suicide Prevention Lifeline
    1-800-273-TALK (8255)
  • Go to the nearest hospital or emergency room
  • Call your physician, health provider or clergy
  • National Alliance on Mental Illness
    www.nami.org
    1-800-950-NAMI (6264)
I also discussed when to call your health provider. Sometimes side effects can linger and there are some things you can do. If your side effects are moderate to severe and aren't tolerable, your health care provider may change the dose of your current medication, change your medication or may add another medication to your current regimen.

If your current medication is treating your depression well then adding a medication to counteract antidepressant side effects may help.

Watch for these common antidepressant side effects:

  • Dry mouth
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Insomnia
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Weight gain, increased appetite
