Get StartedOther forms of hormone therapy for breast cancer
By Mayo Clinic staffOther forms of hormone therapy are available for estrogen receptor positive women who haven't yet reached menopause. But these treatments are far less common in the United States than is the use of tamoxifen. One method is to shut down the ovaries (ovarian ablation) because they produce estrogen. This may be done by surgically removing the ovaries, by radiation or with hormones — luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH) or gonadotropin-releasing hormone (Gn-RH) agonists. There's no evidence that these other methods are any better than using tamoxifen, nor is there clear evidence that combining these with tamoxifen adds any benefit. But ongoing studies are evaluating this issue.
