By Mayo Clinic staffIt's unclear whether chelation therapy can prevent or treat heart disease. A large clinical trial, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, is ongoing to see if chelation therapy can treat heart disease. The researchers working on the trial have finished recruiting participants and will release the study results within the next few years.
Because of the lack of scientific evidence to support chelation therapy as treatment for heart disease, the Food and Drug Administration hasn't approved chelation therapy. Also, the American Heart Association doesn't recommended chelation therapy as a treatment for heart disease.
