Some tips to deal with pregnancy nausea and vomiting
By Mary Murry, R.N., C.N.M.
Before I ever got pregnant, I worried I would have pregnancies like my dear sister. I think she vomited from the time the sperm united with the egg until her placenta delivered. She never had relief, it just became more predictable. She got the vomiting and fast labor genes and I got the no nausea or vomiting and the slow labor gene.
According to the UpToDate database, some degree of nausea with or without vomiting occurs in 50 to 90 percent of all pregnancies. It begins at five to six weeks gestation, peaking at nine weeks, and usually getting better by 16 to 18 weeks. My sister was one of the 5 percent who continue with it until delivery.
Why do we get nauseated and vomit in pregnancy? Good question — with no definitive answer. There are no studies that can say what causes it. There are theories about hormonal changes and abnormal gastric motility as well as psychological factors.
What can we do about it? If you know that there is a trigger for the nausea, such as the smell of fried food, avoid that. No trips through a drive-through window. Other triggers can be stuffy rooms, perfume and heat. Brushing your teeth can bring it on. Sometimes the iron in your supplements can cause gastric irritation. You could stop your prenatal and take a standard multivitamin or just take your folic acid supplements until after you are feeling better. Eat before or as soon as you feel hungry. An empty stomach can aggravate nausea. Eat frequent high-carbohydrate, low-fat meals. Powdered ginger (1 to 1.5 grams in divided doses over 24 hours) has a positive effect. Some women find lemon-drop candies help.
If your nausea and vomiting are unstoppable, let your health provider know. There is a condition called hyperemesis gravidarum (too much vomiting while pregnant — have to love the fancy name) that can be serious. If you have persistent vomiting and have weight loss exceeding 5 percent of your pre-pregnancy weight, you could fall in this group. Seek help immediately.
I am sure many of you ladies have experienced this. Share with us the things you did to help get through this stage of pregnancy.

It is good to hear some alternates to ginger, ginger, and more ginger. I am 7.5 weeks and gradually getting more nauseous each day. Luckily I am able to keep food down, but feel like running to the bathroom every 10 minutes. It is so deceptive; one morning I will feel great only to be sidelined around 10am, then the next day I will feel horrible from the time I wake up until 5pm. I think the most frustrating part is not being able to "fix" it. Maybe I will go buy one of the neausea bracelets. - Warm wishes to all of you!

i am looking forward to trying some of these remedies. i have gotten progressively sicker since 5 weeks. i am about 7.5 weeks now and am so sick all day. i haven't thrown up because i try very hard not to with deep breathing, but constantly feel like i am going to. the nausea this pregnancy has been severe and i don't know how i'm going to make it through the next weeks. my husband is not very understanding and he seems to think it's not as bad as it really is. it is so nice to know there are others going through the same horrible time and it isn't just me- it can make you feel so alone. thank you for the suggestions, a couple i've tried to no avail but i will be trying others! with hope & thoughts for the rest of you.

I am 34 years old and this is my first pregnancy. I am at about Week #6 and have experienced severe nausea, vomiting 2-3x/day and lost close to 10 lbs so far in only two weeks. It is horribly debilitating and I spend most of the day in bed or curled over the toilet - not a pretty sight! It was a shock, for me and for my poor husband, as niether of us expected any of this! I really thought that morning sickness meant feeling nauseas in the morning or at night, but not ALL DAY! Yesterday I reached my wits end and had an exceptionally bad day. At 12 midnight, I broke down and had my husband pick up a prescription that my doctor had given me for Zofran. (I was trying to resist taking medication.) It is a small pill frequently used for chemo patients to subdue nausea. Surprisingly enough it smells and tastes good as it dissolves on your tongue, which is how this pill has to be taken. And as I am sure many of you other pregnant women know NOTHING smells good!! The smell of my deodorant bothers me so much that I have to keep my arms down. The smell of my shampoo in the shower when I am washing my hair smells like urine to me. And of course any strong food cooking smells have to be kept to a dull roar. Anyway, I digress, to make a long story short, the Zofran has worked very well for me. I took one last night and a second one as soon as I woke up this morning at 7a.m. and today has been a much, MUCH better day for me. :-)

I am 9 weeks, this is my third pregnancy. my first 2 pregnancys were 15 yrs ago. i'm 38 and sick as a dog! I never felt this sick with my first 2 pregnancy's . It is all can do to get through the day! I'm not thowing up, but I feel like i could at any minute! All Day!!! I tell my husband that i feel like I have the flu all day every day! He has been cooking for the family because i can't stand the smell of food cooking!!! AHHH I hope it eases off in the second trimester....I can't handle this for much longer. I eat plain popcorn with salt to get through. I'm usually very upbeat. I wish I could function like my usual self. A Bit depressed

To treat my nausea I'm taking a combo of 25mg Doxylamine succinate (Unisom TABLETS) with 50mg of vitamin B6 every night before bed. Of coarse, talk to your Dr. first. This combo is sold in Canada as the drug Diclectin and is prescribed specifically for woman with nausea & vomiting in pregnancy. Not available to us in the USA. The Unisom/B6 combo is a life saver for me. I was close to HG with my first pregnancy. With the Unisom / B6 combo, I'm queasy most of the time, but am able to keep down 99% of what I eat. I I also try to watch my diet. I avoid dairy (specifically yogurt & ice cream, pudding, etc.), most sweets, black pepper & anything spicy. I noticed that these foods always irritate my bowel and cause more severe nausea until I, um, pass them. Hope this helps someone. =)

Headaches are just awful, maybe worse when pregnant because the medications available are less. I am including a link to our page about headaches and pregnancy. I hope it will help. I'm sure that there is something that can help your daughter-in-law. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/headaches-du

My daughter in law has frequent migraines and is now 8 weeks pregnant. She hasn't had morning sickness, but has had 1-2 migraines each week now that results is 3-4 bouts of vomitting. Her first OB visit is another 10 days away and she was told to take Tylonol...but that does nothing for the migraines and she usually throws it up. Is there anything safe to take for the migraines during pregnancy? Right now she tries to sip gingerale but I'm afraid she'll get dehydrated. It doesn't stay down either.

Wow, it is good to know I'm not the only one. I'm 8 weeks now, and I am nauseous all day, everyday. I eat high protein and carbohydrate foods before I get up and throughout the day, because an empty stomach makes it worse. I'm currently trying all the ginger stuff I can get my hands...so far no success. I think I will have to try rx meds. I can't go anywhere or do anything, I just lie around feeling like I've been food poisoned. Food makes me sick, no food makes me sick, thinking about food makes me sick, certain color patterns make me sick...ugh. I just want this to end!

ANTI-NAUSEA BRACELETS. $13-ish. They work by triggering a pressure-point on your wrists. You get relief in 2-5 min and can wear them for an unlimited time. I swear by them.

This is my 6th pregnancy, and it just gets worse each time. The things I've found to help are the Chinese dried plums that are a little sweet and sour. They help a lot with the nauseous feeling and upset stomachs. I've also found that eating small snacks throughout the day helps a lot. Good luck.

This is my 3rd pregnancy and I can say my 1st was great never had morning sickness my 2nd I had some and this one never seems to let up. I am about 6 weeks and I feel like I have a constant stomach ache. I hate it. Everything makes me sick so I have been doing research to see what helps. My doctor gave me a list of things that I can try for nausea so I am going to try one thing at a time. I have come to the conclusion that every one is different and you just need to find what works for you. You best bet talk to your doctor if natrual remedies dont work then prescriptions might. I just know I want to get better.

its amazing to hear other women out there going through what i am going through. I have been so sick to my stomach. I would throw up 20 plus times a day. I spent 6 weeks in the hospital... i was so sick that i had two iv; One of the ivs was regular fluids and the 2nd iv was lipids, fats, and a vitamin supplement. I got zolphran every 6hrs through the iv. It was horrible.. I lost so much weight... Iam now 14weeks and THANK GOD. I am just nauseaed all day instead of vomitting.. My doc sent me home with a zolphran pump but it is not helping with the nausea at all. I had to quit work and school because I was so sick.. I realluy hope that I can be normal again.. I thought pregnancy was a joyous time.. but in my case I am very sick.. it makes me feel a whole lot better to know that there are other women out there who go through the same thing. I really hope that I will be 100% better soon. Good luck everyone

Am in the 10th week of my 3rd pregnancy and have had nausea for all the three kids. Luckily for me, no vomiting but just feeling terribly sick throughout the day. Sometimes I wonder if I will survive it and still have my job! I haven't found anything that helps, I just persevere it... I leak salt but just for momentary relief. Planning on trying more frequent meals to see if this helps... All you suffering out there, just hang in there, luckily it is not for a lifetime!

Perhaps B-natal may be an option. It is 25mg of vitamin B6 in every dose. B6 has been clinically proven to relieve nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.

I am 8 weeks and 6 days pregnant, experiencing all day nausea and loss of diet. I detest the smell of any food. Have tried-ginger,lemons,seabands,reglan and other tips. All I do is wakeup and lay on the couch for the rest of the day helping myself to cereal and waffles through out the day. I have to start work from next week and not sure I can handle it. Any help? Please!

Am 11 weeks into my third pregnancy and vomiting and nausea 24 hrs a day since week 5- was like this right through with the first and until 16 weeks with the second then it eased a little.Keep holding onto how much I love my children but definitely not having a fourth! Haven't found anything that helps but each day you try something like travel sickness bands or Ginger fills in a little time until you decide they are useless! It is worse if you are tired though try and rest which may not be easy if you work and have other kids! Much sympathy any good luck to fellow sufferers!

I'm 7 weeks with my second child and this time is already totally different! It began about 2 weeks ago. I'm feeling awful most of the time. With my first child I felt great the entire time. I'm not throwing up thank God, but all the other symptoms are there. I found that eating small healthy snackslike toast or fruit helps. I;m having really bad headaches also, but hopefully things will get better soon!! I teach 1st grade!!!

I have lost 12 lbs. this first trimester. With my first, the vomitting ended at around the third month...NOT so with this one. The Dr. perscribed Zofran, and nausea medicine often given to chemotherapy patients. This DID NOT work. It gave me SEVERE headaches. I'd rather be sick than have a headache.

My naturopath recommended protein to prevent nausea during my first pregnancy and it totally worked for me. As long as I have at least 3-4 servings of lean protein a day I am never sick (ie. soy milk, rice protein shake, chicken or fish). I am early into my second pregnancy and so far I have not had any morning sickness as long as I have my protein. Its worth a try - good luck!

Someone told me to drink a large glass of warm water first thing in the morning and then throw it up. The last bit of it was a foul yellow bile type substance, and I was fine the rest of the day. This wouldn't work for sickness after eating.

I started with my nausea at about 6 weeks. (Currenly in week 24 of my first pregnancy). After missing 2 days of work, I called my OB to see if there was anything I could do. Office staff asked my name to get my chart, and I started crying! I was able to tell them that I had not been keeping any food down (wasn't eating because I knew it would come up), and they prescribed phenergen and B-6. It helped. But an equal help was my amazing husband who would hold me for a while, then cook me all kinds of "beige food" (cream of wheat, mashed potatoes, etc), and then grill any food he could for himself and eat it outside while I curled up on the couch or in bed. That lasted until about week 14. I've been off and on, often feeling really good, until the last couple of days. I've just read that about week 24 (where I am now), the placenta steps up hormone production again. I have retreated to Gala apples, bananas, and generally mild flavors, with a bedside snack to wake up to. How long could this last?? I'm concerned because, while I haven't really lost weight, I haven't really gained any either.
