You may feel like you need to just snap out of it, just get over it, just get back to the things that you used to do. The problem with depression is, that's just not so easy. The symptoms of depression themselves make a person feel like they have less energy. They're getting poor quality of sleep. It's harder to make decisions. And oftentimes there's a real sense of disappointment and self-criticalness that a person experiences with depression. So although it sounds like a good idea to just snap out of it, with depression it really isn't that easy. Oftentimes when you have a therapist, a clinician, someone who can help you figure out small steps to change, then you build your confidence and your ability to make change, and then you can move toward feeling better. But it's not like flipping a switch. It's not like a person can just say, "There, I'm going to not be depressed anymore." It doesn't seem to work that way.
