Diabetic hyperosmolar syndrome may be triggered by:

  • Illness
  • An underlying infection, such as pneumonia, dental or a urinary tract infection
  • Not following your diabetes treatment plan
  • Certain medications, such as water pills (diuretics)

Sometimes undiagnosed diabetes results in diabetic hyperosmolar syndrome.
