Proper Use

You should set a date to stop smoking. You should start taking varenicline one week before this date .

You should take this medicine with a full glass of water after eating .

Dosing

The dose of this medicine will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of this medicine. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

The amount of medicine that you take depends on the strength of the medicine. Also, the number of doses you take each day, the time allowed between doses, and the length of time you take the medicine depend on the medical problem for which you are using the medicine.

  • For an aid to stop smoking:
    • For oral dosage form (tablet):
      • Adults—
        • Days 1 to 3: 0.5 milligram (mg) one time a day.
        • Days 4 to 7: 0.5 milligram (mg) two times a day.
        • Days 8 to End of treatment: 1 milligram (mg) twice a day .
      • Children—Use and dose will be determined by your doctor.

If you have successfully stopped smoking at the end of 12 weeks, your doctor may prescribe another 12 weeks of this medicine to increase your long-term abstinence .

If you do not succeed in stopping smoking during the first 12 weeks or if you relapse during treatment, you should make another attempt after you have addressed concerns with your doctor .

Storage

Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep from freezing.

Keep out of the reach of children.

Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.

Ask your healthcare professional how you should dispose of any medicine you do not use.
