Avoid swimmers' itch: Watch where you swim

By Mayo Clinic staff

Swimmer's itch, also known as cercarial dermatitis, is an itchy rash caused by certain parasites that normally live on waterfowl and freshwater snails. To reduce your risk of swimmer's itch, avoid swimming in fresh water lakes in summer heat or in areas where swimmer's itch is a known problem or where posted signs warn of contamination.
