Sunscreen shopping tips

By Mayo Clinic staff

Not all sunscreens are created equally. When you're selecting sunscreen, keep these tips in mind: 1. Select a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. 2. Look on the ingredient label for oxybenzone, sulisobenzone, avobenzone (Parsol 1789), ecamsule, titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. 3. If you have sensitive skin, choose sunscreen that doesn't contain potential allergens, such as fragrances or dyes. 4. Beware of tanning oils and lotions, which may not contain any sunscreen.
