- Diabetes, which is the most common risk factor for chronic kidney failure in the United States
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Sickle cell disease
- Lupus erythematosus
- Atherosclerosis
- Chronic glomerulonephritis
- Kidney disease present at birth (congenital)
- Bladder outlet obstruction
- Overexposure to toxins and to some medications
- Family history of kidney disease
- Age 60 or older
