Mitral valve prolapse

Illustration of mitral valve prolapse

The mitral valve separates the heart's left upper chamber (left atrium) and the left lower chamber (left ventricle). In mitral valve prolapse, the mitral valve doesn't close properly. Sometimes this leads to mitral valve regurgitation — a condition in which blood leaks backward into the left atrium.
