Causes

By Mayo Clinic staff

Molluscum contagiosum results from an infection by the molluscum contagiosum virus — a member of the poxvirus family.

This virus spreads easily through:

  • Direct skin-to-skin contact
  • Contact with contaminated objects, such as toys, doorknobs and faucet handles
  • Sexual contact with an affected partner

Scratching or rubbing the papules spreads the virus to nearby skin, as can shaving.
