Complications

Complications of glucocorticoid therapy (which are more likely with high doses and/or prolonged use) may include:

  • Adrenal suppression (abrupt cessation could result in adrenal crisis)
  • Iatrogenic Cushing syndrome
  • Osteopenia/osteoporosis
  • Hyperglycemia/diabetes mellitus
  • Hypertension
  • Gastritis
  • Myopathy
  • Increased risk of infection
  • Avascular necrosis
  • Cataracts and glaucoma
  • Increased skin friabilty
