Proper Use

Take this medicine only as directed by your doctor. Do not take more of it, do not take it more often, and do not take it for a longer time than your doctor ordered.

This medicine should come with a patient information leaflet. Read and follow these instructions carefully. Ask your doctor if you have any questions.

Measure the liquid medicine with the oral syringe and take it within 5 minutes. Throw away any unused medicine after 5 minutes. Do not save leftover medicine.

Take the medicine after a meal at about the same time each day. Drink a glass of water after taking the liquid to make sure it has been swallowed completely.

If you are giving this medicine to an infant, give it after breastfeeding. Do not mix it with milk or formula.

If you or your child cannot swallow the medicine, you may take it using a nasogastric or gastrotomy tube. Flush the tube with water after to make sure you get all of the medicine.

Dosing

The dose of this medicine will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of this medicine. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

The amount of medicine that you take depends on the strength of the medicine. Also, the number of doses you take each day, the time allowed between doses, and the length of time you take the medicine depend on the medical problem for which you are using the medicine.

  • For oral dosage form (solution):
    • For spinal muscular atrophy:
      • Adults and children 2 years of age and older weighing 20 kilograms (kg) or more—5 milligrams (mg) once a day.
      • Children 2 years of age and older weighing less than 20 kg—Dose is based on body weight and must be determined by your doctor. The dose is usually 0.25 milligram per kilogram (mg/kg) of body weight once a day.
      • Infants 2 months to less than 2 years of age—Dose is based on body weight and must be determined by your doctor. The dose is usually 0.2 mg/kg of body weight once a day.
      • Infants younger than 2 months of age—Dose is based on body weight and must be determined by your doctor. The dose is usually 0.15 mg/kg of body weight once a day.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.

If you miss a dose and it is within 6 hours of your usual dose schedule, take it as soon as possible, and then go back to your regular schedule. If you miss a dose and it is more than 6 hours of your usual dose schedule, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time.

Storage

Store in the refrigerator. Do not freeze.

Keep out of the reach of children.

Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.

Ask your healthcare professional how you should dispose of any medicine you do not use.

Throw away any unused medicine 64 days after it was mixed.
