Neurofibromatosis Clinic

The goal of Mayo's Neurofibromatosis (NF) Clinic is to provide the highest quality coordinated care to our patients and their families. We offer a "clinic without walls," where physicians from a variety of specialties are available for consult. We provide clinical evaluations for neurofibromatosis (type 1 and type 2) and schwannomatosis — and all of our physicians have significant experience treating patients with these rare and complex conditions.

Our multispecialty Neurofibromatosis Clinic is coordinated through the Department of Medical Genetics and led by Dr. Dusica Babovic-Vuksanovic, a medical geneticist who is a well-recognized international expert in neurofibromatosis. The clinic staff involves colleagues from different clinical areas, including neurology; neuro-oncology; neurosurgery; ear, nose and throat (ENT); radiology; and pain medicine; as well as specialists from ophthalmology, orthopedics, general surgery, radiation oncology and oncology.

Mayo's NF Clinic has a designated genetic counselor. Genetic counselors help patients and their families to:

  • Make decisions regarding management and testing that are appropriate for each individual patient and family in view of risk, family goals, and ethical and religious standards
  • Cope with a diagnosis
  • Understand medical facts
  • Appreciate the role of heredity associated with NF

Clinical research is an important aspect of Mayo's NF Clinic, including clinical trials that will ultimately lead to significant strides in the treatment of neurofibromatosis.
