Cytopathology Laboratory

The Cytopathology Laboratory diagnoses malignant and premalignant lesions and diseases on the microscopic level. One of the most common tests the lab processes and analyzes is the Pap test. The Pap test is one of the most successful cancer-screening tools ever developed, reducing deaths from cervical cancer by about 70 percent. Other specimens reviewed include body fluids and fine needle aspirations. The Cytopathology Laboratory performs testing on specimens from virtually any body site, including the lungs, thyroid and urinary tract.

The Cytopathology Laboratory collaborates with the Molecular Anatomic Pathology Laboratory to help manage patient care and achieve precise results. Some samples are split for a combination of tests performed in both areas. The Cytopathology Laboratory provides high-quality diagnoses using the most effective proven methodology. Each year about 46,000 specimens are microscopically analyzed by our highly skilled lab assistants, clinical lab technologists, cytotechnologists and pathologists. The laboratory provides the latest in proven technology, including ThinPrep GYN cytology, endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspirations of both the bronchial and GI tract, and molecular testing. Our staff is involved in the education of cytotechnology students through the Mayo School of Health Sciences. Working as a team, the laboratory professionals promote excellence in patient care, research, education and continuous improvement.
